Now is a great time of year to start thinking about getting your eating habits back on track. The holidays are over and Spring will be here before you know it. Get a jump start on bathing suit season by taking small easy steps now.
One way to do this is by introducing foods that are known to assist the liver in detoxing the body.
The liver has the unique ability to bind up toxins so they can be escorted out of the body. Diets that are high in sugary foods, refined carbohydrates (like white bread and bagels,) and unhealthy fats (like those found in prepackaged foods) make the liver’s job more difficult. An overworked liver can’t do its job properly, which can lead to illness, lack of energy and weight gain.
Your goal should be to assist your liver by eating as many healthy foods as possible.
You can get back on track now by introducing some of these liver-assisting foods into your everyday diet. These include, among others:
- green leafy vegetables such as Swiss chard, kale, Romaine lettuce, mustard greens
- bitter herbs such as parsley, dandelion, and arugula
- citrus fruits like grapefruit and lemon
One quick way to get started is to drink water with lemon added. I like to have a glass first thing in the morning, and include a glass with every meal. Not only is the lemon juice helping to cleanse the body, the water also hydrates every cell of your body. Cells need water in order to function properly, including processing nutrients and getting rid of waste. All of these processes are necessary to maintain a healthy weight and stay healthy.
