August 2016 Newsletter

Hope everyone is enjoying the summer. These past few months have been a busy time for our new board. We have been meeting almost weekly to get things ready to kick off our first full year in our forever home. When our final calendar is unveiled in September, you will see some of your old favorites, as well as a lot of wonderful new endeavors. Thank you to everyone who participated in our committee meetings and idea sessions. We could not have done it without you.

A huge thank you to Winston & Strawn for all their help.

For those of you who could not make our annual meeting, we elected two new members to the board and two board members continued on in their roles. Thank you for putting your trust in us.

The Saxby Award has been given every year since 1973 to a club member who is sincere, has given outstanding service to the Club to keep it working at its best, and is always ready to help, no matter what the job. It was Judy Foyer Phillips honor, as last year’s recipient, to give the award to Diane Dorn at our June 1st Annual Meeting. Diane has been an active member in the Club since 1999 and is currently the Dining Out Chair. And, a few weeks after receiving her award, Diane showed her willingness to step up and do whatever the club needs by sitting in the brutal to sell raffle tickets and recruit new members at the sidewalk sale.

The NSE had another record year at this year’s sidewalk sale. It was wonderful to see so many volunteers at the shop on June 23-24 and no one was sitting around because the shop was hopping right to the bitter end. In fact, we still had a line of customers who wanted to buy clothes, furniture and household items as the sale ended. The few sidewalk sale items that did not sell were donated to local charities. NSE should be announcing the specific results of the sale soon. WLC also had a raffle at the sidewalk sale that raised over $300 for our scholarship fund and resulted in several new memberships and a long list of people interested in learning more about the club. Thank you to Writers Theatre and Guildhall for supplying the prizes and to all those who worked the table including Polly Richter, Judy Foyer Phillips, Diane Dorn and Jennifer Parkinson. Don’t forget that the NSE is always looking for volunteers, donations and consigners. The shop continues to be our major philanthropic effort and keeps becoming more successful every day. Check out the shop’s new online store. Introduce yourself to Missy Brownson, the shop’s amazing manager, if you have not done so already.

MEMBERSHIP – a message from Judy
We had a record number of members renew their memberships and only a very few who did not because they were moving or had moved. The club has over 115 members and is growing every week. The printed directory is being finalized and will be available at the Opening Party, with the online version available in September. Joining WLC has never been easier. Applications are available electronically by sending an email to, online at and by calling Judy at 847-835-5317. In addition, be on the lookout for our new membership applications at the entrance to the Writers Theatre building and a new write up in the 2016-2017 WT programs with membership information.

Thanks to Sarah Scherdt and Jamie Straight, we have a great looking website at, loaded with club information and links to other local entities. We have a members only section, an online member directory and an electronic membership application. Check the calendar section for all upcoming events. COMING SOON: online registration and payment for club events. Our online newsletter will be launching in the fall. This is an effort to be green, but informative

Jane Passy and her posse are busy planning the September 25th event to open our 2016-2017 season at Writers Theatre. Invitations will be out in late August or early September, as well as announced on our website. In the meantime, be sure to save the date.

Jean Howlett and Ellie Pagano have been great co-chairs for the Random Readers group throughout the summer and will be continuing for at least another year. The next meeting of the group is August 17th at Writers Theatre at 11am. The book for August is Fifth Queen by Ford Maddox Ford. Back in print, Ford's highly acclaimed portrait of Henry VIII's controversial fifth Queen. This historical fiction book centers on Katharine Howard--clever, beautiful, and outspoken--who catches the jaded eye of Henry VIII. Corruption and fear pervade the King's court, and the dimly lit corridors vibrate with the intrigues of unscrupulous courtiers hungry for power. Soon, Katharine is locked in a vicious battle with Thomas Cromwell, as she fights for political and religious change. Who doesn’t love a story about British royalty?
This fall, we will also be launching a cook book club that promises to bring delicious food and great company, as well as an evening book
group. If you are interested in chairing or co-chairing either one of these, let us know by sending an email to or call 847-812-7825.

Next bridge date is July 27th. The last month of Summer bridge is August with August 10th and 24th as the final two regular dates. All bridge events take place in the Patrons Lounge at WT. Thank you to Lucy Hayes, Roberta Olshansky and Allean Donato for putting on another fun summer. And thank you to Sheila Devlin for volunteering to have a summer bridge tournament – date and place to be announced shortly. In addition, Sheila has volunteered to organize our 2016-2017 Fall/Winter/Spring session, which starts on September 28th. Watch for information on the addition of a learning table at all bridge games. Sharon King is working on our 2016 Bridge Benefit.

We will publish on the website and welcome all members to attend to give us thoughts and suggestions or just listen and learn.
