October 2016 Newsletter

Fall is here and our year has officially started. Our opening party was September 25th and a good time was had by the nearly 80 people who attended. There were lots of new faces, quite a few guests and many long-time members. The music, martinis and food were great and the the time flew by. Our first fundraiser as a 501c3 netted over $1000 for our philanthropy fund. A big thank you to Jane Passy and Marcie Pickard for their efforts to get the whole evening coordinated. The first event is always the hardest but Jane showed she has what it takes to give us a great year of social events.

NORTH SHORE EXCHANGE - Wendy Serrino, President/Missy Brownson, Manager

The NSE has its annual grant party last night. What an amazing job the shop and all its volunteers (that’s us you know) do to help so many wonderful organizations. A total of $275,000 was given away to deserving organizations serving woman and children. If you are not already volunteering at the shop, consider starting this year. It is a fun way to meet new people and do a good deed in the process. The other way you can help the shop is to consign or donate clothing, household item and furniture. Finally, you can always just shop there!

Thanks to Jennifer Parkinson and her determination to get us online payments, we can now take credit cards on our website for dues, events and donations. And starting with our October lunch, we should be able to take credit cards at the door. The site was only up for a few minutes before we had several people who paid online for our upcoming lunch. And online payments would not be possible, if we did not have such a wonderful website at wlcglencoe.org. Jamie Straight and Sarah Scherdt have worked all summer to take us to the next level with the site, our new applications (check them out in the lobby of WT) and the directory. Our 2016-2017 directory is printed and we have distributed nearly half of them. We will continue to give them our in person at the next bridge and first monthly lunch, as well as at the NSE. The board hopes that all of you are enjoying your membership gift of WLC notecards (designed by Sarah Scherdt). We appreciate all of you very much.

We are happy to report the directories are already out of date because the club has grown….Please join us in welcoming our new members who have joined since the directory was printed:

Milena, member #134
Carolyn, member #135
Lola, member #136

Nobody’s Perfect - as much as we tried and no matter how many times we proofed the directory, we are only human. If you have any corrections (or updates), please let us know. We will be issuing regular updates as we continue to grow. And you will notice we left room in the book for member additions and notes.

WHAT’S HAPPENING in OCTOBER (and late September)

ACTIVE GROUP - Marcie Pickard, Chair
We are please to launch the WLC Active group. Our first great offer is from REACH YOGA.

From September 26 through the end of the year, Women's Library Club members can attend either of two classes for only $10 per class (usually $15-20 per class). Choose either of these options (or both!): Hatha I with Mary on Mondays, 11:00-12:15; or Basics & Beyond with Laura F. on Thursdays, 5:15-6:15pm.
The Glencoe Park District is still offering all WLC members resident rates for events and classes, regardless of where they live and Marcie will be announcing more co-sponsored events with the GPD shortly. Watch the website and the newsletter.

If you have questions or want to help Marcie with planning events, please contact her. Her email is marciepickard@comcast.net and her phone is 847-242-9415.

Random Readers has changed its meeting date to October 26th because of the bridge benefit. Watch the website for what they will be reading as the group picked a new book for October. You can also contact Ellie Pagano and Jean Howlett with information and questions.
In November, we will also be launching a cook book club that promises to bring delicious food and great company. We are also hoping to get a night book group going in 2017. If you are interested in chairing or co-chairing either one of these, let us know by sending an email to wlcGlencoe@gmail.com or call 847-812-7825.

BRIDGE - Sheila Devlin, chair
Next bridge date is Wednesday September 28th. Sheila Devlin has taken over as the bridge chair. If you are planning on playing this fall and winter, please make sure that Sheila knows that as she has also had some computer difficulties.

In addition to our October bridge, Sharon King is chairing the 2016 bridge benefit on October 19th. If you have not gotten the flyer, please make sure to get in touch with Sharon. Sharon is hoping for 80 people and is working hard to achieve her goal. Please help her by coming and bringing a non-member partner, if at all possible. Any questions, call Sharon at 847-835-0054 or email her at bridgeplayer45@comcast.net. The cost for bridge, lunch and prizes is $40 per person. The event will be at the club.

Our first lunch is on October 5th - CLEAN EATING with Evey Schweig, holistic health coach. Cost is $30 for members who RSVP and get their payment in by Sept 30th. Cost for non-members and payments received after 9/30 is $40. Walk-ins will be on a very limited space available basis. The food promises to be as delicious as the talk. Don’t forget you can register and pay online at wlcglencoe.org. Otherwise, mail your checks payable to WLC to 321 Park Av, Glencoe, 60022. your reservation is not confirmed until we have received your payment. If you make a reservation and then change your mind before sending in your payment, PLEASE let us know. We run on a very tight budget, so it is important for us to have an accurate count for each event. We don’t want to seem mean or harsh, but we really need members to honor their commitments and pay if they do not come without canceling.
DINING OUT – Diane Dorn, Chair
The next dining out is on Thursday October 13th. The group will be celebrating Oktoberfest at the Edelweiss in Porridge. Please RSVP to Diane by Oct 7th at 847-835-1174 or dianepdorn@gmail.com to let her know you will be joining in. Carpools can be arranged, if you are interested.

A group of over 15 members had a great outing to the Northlight theatre last week to see their first play. Susan Ebner is busy planning the next event. Watch the website and newsletter for details.
